News is that Google have started using a machine-learning artificial intelligence system, which has been named “Rank Brain”. What RankBrain does is, help Google sort through it’s search results. The first story was brought to fore by Bloomberg.
This pops a question in everyone’s mind that, what exactly is machine learning? It is where a computer learns itself how to do something, rather than being taught by humans following a programme. It basically uses artificial intelligence to embed vast amounts of written language into mathematical entities, called vectors that the machine (computer) can understand. It is so effective that it sees a word or phrase which isn’t familiar with and filters it accordingly and can also handle never seen before queries. RankBrain is one of the hundreds of signals that run into an algorithm that regulates what results appear on a Google search page and how they are ranked. It’s importance has been increasing and is the 3rd most important signal contributing to the result of a search query.
What’s important to note is that RankBrain is not a ranking
signal but rather a query processing tool. It is an integral part of
‘HummingBird’ algorithm but does not take care of all
searches, instead only the overall algorithm would. RankBrain is just an
addition to the already existing 200 major ranking signals but the newest one.
